Time Travel Thursday #4 - Coastal Cottage Charm

I've shared with you before that the Yankee and I are big time

 junk connoisseurs.  He and I take in others' unwanted castoffs,

the way some people take in strays!  We just can't seem to turn something down,

if we see potential in it.

Can you spot a hidden pearl waiting to be

discovered here?

The curvaceous legs and charming cutouts on the skirt of

this table were enough to entice me to rescue her.

But it was pretty apparent that the four panel inserts of this unwanted treasure 

were damaged beyond repair.  So it was time to take out the handy-dandy

circular saw and make way for something much better.

Lots of sanding brought out some of the beauty that had been hidden beneath

all that time-applied grime and aging.

The results to this point were not too bad.  But this was only the beginning of the

transformation we had planned.

Strips of wood were cut, sanded, and glued in as supports for the new top. 

And while the Yankee was attending to all that...

 

I was back in the barn looking through our stash of beaded boards.  Once I

found what I was looking for, the boards were cleaned,

brushed, and cut to size.

As I was busying myself with those details, the Yankee was mixing paint to

brighten up our little beauty.  He mixed a cottage white with a hint of

 nutmeg brown, and I threw in a few tablespoons of pale yellow,

for good measure.

The final color was the perfect complement to the beadboard

that had been prepared early. 

Like pieces to a puzzle the vintage boards were put into place...

and an ocean of coastal charm emerged.

you just never know when a beautiful pearl

Now it's my turn to share another Brambleberry Cottage tip and trick.

I almost forgot to take pictures!  So just imagine this roller is still loaded with paint. 

Come on!  I know you can do it!

A number of years ago–quite by accident–I discovered this little trick for cleaning a paint roller.

At the time, I did not have a utility sink and hated cleaning paint brushes and rollers in my kitchen and bathroom sinks.

Desperate for an alternative,  I took the tedious task outside–and loved the results.

Here's the trick: 

Starting at one end of the roller–along the edge...

repeatedly move the stream of water from a gardenhose back and forth, toward...

the opposite end.

The force of the water will start the roller spinning, and centrifugal force will spin the diluted paint and water out of the roller.

But...here are few tips for this trick:

Start with a light stream of water, at first, and build up the pressure as the paint begins to wash out of the roller. 

If you have an extension handle, use it.  If not, be careful to start out slowly, or you might just end up wearing pretty paint spatters.  ; )

Make sure you perform this task in an area where flying paint and water won't damage anything.

Once the roller is satisfactorily cleaned, try these tricks to dry it faster.

 

After removing the roller cover from the roller, begin squeezing it, top...

to bottom,...

while rotating it in your hands.  Do this until there is no longer any water to wring out.

Next, while gripping the cover firmly in your hand, give it a few abrupt shakes toward the ground.

Now you're good to go for the next round of painting.

And there you have it!
